What this office does
The Supervisor of Elections administers voter registration, maintains the county's voter rolls, sets up and staffs early voting sites and Election Day precincts, prints and processes ballots (including vote-by-mail), and tabulates and certifies results for every federal, state, county, school board, and municipal election in Miami-Dade. Because the office runs elections for every level of government at once, its calendar rarely has a quiet year: county, state, and federal races are staggered so some kind of election is nearly always being prepared for, run, or certified.
How the office works
The Supervisor of Elections is elected countywide to a four-year term. Miami-Dade held its first-ever election for this office in November 2024, after Amendment 10 to the Florida Constitution required charter counties to make it an elected constitutional office; before that, election administration in the county had been handled without a directly elected supervisor. The winner was sworn in on January 7, 2025.
Current officeholder
Alina Garcia, a Republican, became the first elected Supervisor of Elections in Miami-Dade County's history when she defeated Juan-Carlos Planas in the November 2024 general election and took office January 7, 2025. Born in Cuba and raised in Miami-Dade, she represented Florida House District 115 from 2022 to 2024. Earlier in her career she served as chief of staff and senior policy adviser to Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo, deputy chief of staff for Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo, and regional director for state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, in addition to work in real estate.
